Long (200 words)

Community Nature Reserve (CNR) is a pioneering UK-wide initiative transforming private gardens into a connected network of wildlife habitats. Founded in Felixstowe, Suffolk in 2015 and expanding nationally since 2024, CNR addresses the biodiversity crisis by empowering individuals and communities to take meaningful conservation action from their own homes. The concept is simple yet powerful: every registered garden—whether a high-rise balcony, terraced yard, suburban plot, or rural farmhouse—becomes part of a distributed nature reserve. Together, these spaces create vital wildlife corridors for pollinators, birds, hedgehogs, and countless other native species struggling with habitat fragmentation. CNR provides free registration, a Wildlife Impact Calculator showing estimated benefits of garden features, and personalized certificates recognizing conservation contributions. The network has been featured in Resurgence, Positive News, and regional media, and has received a letter from Sir David Attenborough. By making conservation accessible, affordable, and achievable for everyone—from renters with window boxes to landowners with acres—Community Nature Reserve demonstrates that collective small actions create transformative environmental impact. Every garden counts. Every space matters.
